Family Services Testimonial: Jane
Posted: January 4, 2024 | Client Stories
After Jane experienced domestic violence from an abusive partner, she knew she needed to find help for her own sake and that of her two daughters. Taking her brave first step, she sought assistance with the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS), where she began to get back on her feet. Though DPSS provided invaluable help, after a short time, she found herself at a roadblock. She knew she needed help processing her trauma, but the help she received had not met her needs. Due to pandemic restrictions, she was receiving counseling through phone and video calls, but she felt she needed a more personal connection. After asking for a referral to a different agency, her journey brought her to HSA, where she says she found what she wanted and more.
“From the moment I walked through the door, everyone made me feel secure and welcome. They really make you feel you matter,” she says of HSA. Shortly after her enrollment, our Family Services team began working to provide Jane the help she needed, both material and emotional. When she secured a new home for herself and her daughters, HSA helped her purchase new furniture, including a bed and dresser. “They helped me start over,” she says. “They showed me that it’s not about what I lost, but what I’m gaining along my journey.”
As part of our program, Jane began attending group counseling, which has become her favorite part of our services. “Group (counseling) is like a family. You’re all going through similar situations, so you help each other grow. The people there don’t judge you, and they accept you for who you are.”
Thanks to HSA’s assistance, Jane recently shared her story at one of our Domestic Violence Awareness Month events. Afterwards, her group peers gave her warm hugs and support. “Before, I would have never had the courage to speak out. HSA helped me find the strength to do that. I’m more than grateful to have crossed paths with you in my healing journey.”
We’re honored to help Jane, and we look forward to helping her continue to grow and thrive!
